To increase the longitudinal tensile modulus of a unidirectional continuous E-glass fiber- reinforced epoxy, some of the E-glass fibers are replaced with T-300 carbon fibers. The total fiber volume fraction is kept unchanged at 60%. Assume that the E-glass and T-300 carbon fibers in the new composite are uniformly distributed. 1. Calculate the volume fraction of T-300 carbon fibers needed in the new composite to double the longitudinal tensile modulus 2. Compare the longitudinal tensile strength of the new composite with that of the original composite 3. Schematically compare the stress-strain diagrams of the fibers, the matrix, and the composite The tensile modulus and strength of the epoxy are 5 GPa and 50 MPa, respectively. Assume that the tensile stress-strain diagram of the epoxy is linear up to the point of failure.
