Handout: Week 2 Learning Resources Summarizing a Court Decision Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. Kansas Use this summary for guidance in writing your post on a landmark court decision for the Week 2 Discussion: Courts and the Schools. Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. Kansas challenged the idea of "separate but equal" schools. The parents of Linda Brown and 19 other African American children living in Topeka went to court for the right to send their children to the allwhite public schools that were closest to their homes. At the time {1951). elementary schools in Topeka were not integrated. Brown v. Board made the case that segregated schools were not equal. There were differences in the quality of materials and facilities. and in how children felt about themselves as learners. African American children often traveled signicant and unsafe distances to get to school. Linda Brown. a third grader. had to walk through a busy railroad yard to reach the bus that took her to school. The Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board was announced on May 1?. 1954. The court ruled that \"separate educational facilities are inherently unequal." It struck down state laws that allowed deliberately segregated public schools. Brown v. Board had a huge national impact on schools. It led to integrated schools throughout the country. For prospective teachers today. the legacy of Brown v. Board is the expectation of having a classroom with children who may be diverse in race, ethnicity. culture, and language.
