Tobacco use costs over $16.9 billion each year in Canada, including over $4.3 billion in direct health care costs, $12.4 billion in indirect productivity losses, $78.1 million for prevention and research, and $87 million in other direct costs (such as fires and traffic accidents). 

Over 37,000 Canadians die each year due to tobacco use. Tobacco use was responsible for over 515,000 years of potential life lost and over 2.2 million hospital days in 2002

Assuming you had cost estimates for the loss of human life, would it be appropriate to add up all the costs listed above as the total cost of tobacco use. Why or why not?
