Toluene (C7H8) is frequently used as a solvent or thinner for oil based paints. Perform an assessment of potential CPC glove materials to protect against exposure to toluene and answer questions (14) below. Based on airborne exposure limits set by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) of the US, the maximum allowable exposure rate to toluene is approximately 8g/hr. The diffusion coefficients and surface concentrations for toluene in several materials are given in Table 2. The cost and other important information for some commercially available CPC glove materials that may protect against toluene are given in Table 3 . Questions: 1. Determine the breakthrough time in minutes for materials in the table bearing blank boxes using toluene as your example. Show your calculations. Which of the materials have an optimal breakthrough time? You may assume that all of the toluene is immediately absorbed by the skin and swept away by the blood stream.
