Toni is the shop assistant, and you will be playing the role of the store manager.
Role Play Scenario:
Toni works as a travel agent in your Travel Agency. Over the last three weeks there have been two workplace accidents at the store, involving two of his colleagues. One of these accidents resulted in a colleague tripping over a stock box in the storage room and spraining his ankle. This accident occurred due to there being no storage shelves to pack boxes of brochures away. The other accident involved a colleague pulling a muscle in his back by lifting brochure boxes. This staff member did not have access to any resources that could have assisted him to move these boxes.
Toni feels that there is no system in place to deal with workplace health and safety issues at the store. The safety hazards that caused the two accidents have not been adequately addressed and Toni fears that another accident may happen. Toni has never been trained in WHS by his employer, and no accident reports have been completed by his colleagues for these two accidents.
Toni has scheduled a meeting with you, the store manager to discuss this. You are to ensure that you cover all of the below areas in your meeting. Use the information you have been given above and your knowledge of good WHS work practice when consulting Toni. Put your recommendations forward about the changes that need to take place in the store and how the company might be able to improve safety within the store.
Prior to the meeting refresh your knowledge of WHS guidelines, policies and procedures including:
- Organisational safety policy and procedures
- WHS consultation and communication policy (including 4 methods)
- Health and Safety Rep name
- Hazard, incident and near miss reporting procedures
- Hazard identification and reporting
- Information on employee support services
- First aid procedures
- Introduction to First Aid officers
- Location of First Aid room kits
- Emergency procedures including:
- evacuation of staff and customers
- security management of cash, document, equipment, keys and people (at least 2 processes each)
- Location of amenities
- Awareness of potential hazards in the immediate working environment such as:
- manual handling
- handling chemicals and hazardous substances
- Explanation of task specific Safe Work Procedures)
Ensure that you communicate clearly and concisely using appropriate language, and adapt your communication style to encompass any cultural differences or language barriers
Follow WHS regulations and hazard identification processes
Listen to Toni's concerns
Provide Toni with some recommendations to improve workplace safety at the store
Outline your recommendations to ensure that staff are made aware of WHS policies in the workplace
Suggest a way that staff could be involved in the process of creating a system to deal with WHS issues
Request a follow up meeting with Toni to further discuss the outcomes
Provide a written response to Toni to conclude this matter
At the end of the meeting you will need to document the discussion you had with Toni including when and how the two existing safety issues will be addressed by the company.
