Topic: Database Technology

Database technology has been around for over forty years. It has undergone significant changes

over this time. From sequentially accessed flat files, to primary key indexes, to relational

databases and now to some of the more exciting technology designs: Bitcoin's blockchains,

Google's NoSQL "Bigtable", and Cassandra key-value data stores.

Read the material contained in the module and answer the following:

1. Pick a new database technology from the above list (or find one yourself) and briefly

explain its advantages and disadvantages when compared to traditional relational

databases such as Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server. In which applications would your

database technology fit best?

2. Which database technology is used by Facebook? Post a link that describes the Facebook

database architecture.

3. Why are database engineers looking for new technologies, since relational databases have

been so widely used and reliable for more than 30 years? What problems are they trying

to solve?

4. In your opinion, should security and encryption be handled in the database manager, or

should security be a function of the programs that read and write to the database?
