Let us imagine an electric charge creating an electric field in the region of space surrounding it where it exerts a force on any other charge within that region. An electric field is the ratio of net electric force to the charge (q) placed at that point in the field. In symbols, E = F/q Where E is the electric field expressed in N/C F is the electric force expressed in Newtons (N]; and q is the positive test charge in coulomb (C] The direction of the electric field is the same as the direction of the electric force acting on the positive test charge.
