Passage 1 ELEPHANTS IN ANCIENT WARFARE Elephants were the most spectacular, extravagant, and unpredictable element in ancient warfare. Since the time of Alexander the Great, Hellenistic kings and commanders had tried to use the great strength, size, and relative invulnerability of the animals to throw opposing infantry into confusion and flight. Elephants' unusual smell and loud trumpeting also panicked horses not accustomed to the strange beasts, wreaking havoc with cavalry units. Mahouts, or drivers, who were usually Indians, controlled and directed the animal from a seat on the elephant's neck. Normally each elephant carried a small, towerlike structure from which archers could shoot down on EXAMPLE Today, many dead people receive some form of autopsy or postmortem examination. At least (two main reasons for this are (1) the desire of the family to know the exact cause of death, and (2) increased medical knowledge. Because of the important moral and legal restrictions on human experimentation, much of our knowledge of pathology comes from autopsies.
