TOPIC : THE AMOUNT OF COLLEGE STUDENTS GRADUATING SJU THAT WILL MOST LIKELY PURSUE THEIR MASTERS DEGREE AFTER THEY RECIEVED THEIR BACHELORS OR WORK A FULL TIME JOB AFTER GRADUATION.
Gather at least 20 data points to estimate the mean of some large population. Use EXCEL or StatCrunch on these data points, as indicated below. Make a report including the following:
1. A description of the problem, clearly stating the mean you are estimating and the population from which the sample was taken. Also include your best guess as to what the population mean will be.
2. State how the sample was taken.
3. A list of all the sample points and their source (a survey should include the names and addresses or phone numbers of those questioned, if possible). The data may also come from a newspaper or the internet.
4. The computer output for the 95% and 99% confidence intervals.

5. An interpretation of the 95% confidence interval.
6. Test the hypothesis that your population mean is equal to your best guess from part 1 for a = 0.05. Show the computer output for the test. State clearly the null and alternate hypotheses.
7. What are the calculated and table values of t? Did you accept or reject the null hypothesis? Why?
8. What is the p value from the computer output for this problem? Compare that value witha = 0.05. What does this comparison tell you? Be specific to your particular project.
9. Explain the connection between the results in part 5, and your conclusions in parts 7 and 8. Be specific to your particular project.
10. Discuss how your results might be of practical use.

- A description of the problem clearly stating the mean you are estimating and the population from which the sample was taken. Also include your best guess as to what the population mean will be.
I will be estimating the mean number of children wanted by students at TCB.
My population is all TCB students. My best guess is 2 children.
- State how the sample was taken.
The sample was taken by a personal survey. Index cards were distributed to a class in TCB.
- A list of all the sample points and their source (a survey should include the names and addresses or phone numbers of those questioned, if possible). The data may also come from a newspaper or the internet.
The sample points are 0,0,0,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,2,3,3,3,3,3,3,3,4,4,5,7.
The data was gathered by distributing index cards to a TCB BUA1333 class. ID information was not included since the question was very personal.
- The computer output for the 95% and 99% confidence intervals. If you need assistance usingStatCrunchto perform theStatCrunchportion of the project, you can view aYouTubevideo that I prepared. Its URL is

One sample T confidence interval:
: Mean of variable 95% confidence interval results:
Variable | Sample Mean | Std. Err. | DF | L. Limit | U. Limit |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Kids wanted | 2.5909091 | 0.33971653 | 21 | 1.884429 | 3.29738 |
One sample T confidence interval:
: Mean of variable 99% confidence interval results:
Variable | Sample Mean | Std. Err. | DF | L. Limit | U. Limit |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Kids wanted | 2.5909091 | 0.33971653 | 21 | 1.6290495 | 3.5527687 |
- An interpretation of the 95% confidence interval.
We are 95% confident that the mean number of kids wanted by all TCB students will be contained in the interval 1.884 and 3.297 kids.
- Test the hypothesis that your population mean is equal to your best guess from part 1 fora = 0.05. Show the computer output here.
: Mean of variable H0: = 2 HA: 2 Hypothesis test results:
Variable | Sample Mean | Std. Err. | DF | T-Stat | P-value |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Kids wanted | 2.5909091 | 0.33971653 | 21 | 1.7394181 | 0.0966 |
- What are the calculated and table values of t? Did you accept or reject the null hypothesis? Why?
T-Stat or t calculated = 1.7394; t table = 2.0796 from the t-table where the degrees of freedom is 22-1=21 and the probability is 0.05/2=0.025. t calculated < t table; 1.7394<2.0796
Therefore, Do NOT reject H0; my guess was good.
- What is the p value from the computer output for this problem? Compare that value witha = 0.05. What does this comparison tell you? Be specific to your particular project.
The p-value is 0.0966.a = 0.05. < p-value. Therefore, you cannot reject H0.This means that the guess of =2 was accurate and could not be rejected.
- Explain the connection between the results in part 5, and your conclusions in parts 7 and 8. Be specific to your particular project.
In part 5, the 95% confidence interval determined that would be between1.884 and 3.297 kids with a probability of 95%. Since 2 is included in that interval, we cannot conclude that is not equal to 2. This conforms with the results in parts 7 and 8 which concluded that we cannot reject that = 2.
- Discuss how your results might be of practical use.
The University might be interested in these results to keep track of alumni in 20 years to possibly try to recruit the next generation of students if the family size is large enough. This is a little far-fetched.
