1 EXPORT POSITION: Pick any country (not Canada) that you want to study. Pick a recent year (say 2020). Under 'SETTINGS' choose 'SITC rev 1" "gross" "2 digit". Now, choose 'exports'.

a. What was the total value of exports to all countries in that year from your country? b. Looking at the large categories (1 digit), what are the main export sectors and what are their values? c. What are the five largest individual sectors (use the 2 digit level)? d. DISCUSS. Any surprises, insights, etc? Is this what you expected?

2 IMPORT POSITION: Using the same country and same year as in (1). Now, choose 'imports'.

a. What was the total value of imports from all countries in that year? b. Looking at the large categories (1 digit), what are the main export sectors and what are their values? c. What are the five largest individual sectors (4 digit)? d. Comment. Any surprises, insights, etc?

3 TRADE BALANCE: use your country above and collect total exports and total imports for the past 10 years.

a. Construct a table with exports, imports, and trade balance (eg exports - imports). b. Comment on the pattern of exports and imports and trade balance. i.e. are they growing, falling, pretty constant, .... c. Is there any important year, say that stands out or changes the pattern? Discuss

4 Bilateral Trade with CANADA: For the country you chose, choose "BY PARTNER" and then 'exports' and choose 'CANADA' as the destination.

a. What was the total value of exports to CANADA from your country in that year? b. Looking at the large categories (H1 digit), what are the main Export sectors to CANADA and what are their values? c. Comment. Any surprises, insights, etc?

5 Bilateral Trade from CANADA: Now choose 'imports from destination' and choose CANADA as the exporting country. Hit 'build visualization'.

a. What was the total value of exports from CANADA to your country in that year? b. Looking at the large categories (H1 digit), what are the main Export sectors and what are their values? How do they compare to the total of all imports from (2) above? c. Comment. Any surprises, insights, etc?

6 TRADE BALANCE: Collect total exports and total imports for the past 10 years between Canada and your country.

a. Construct a table with exports, imports, and trade balance (eg exports - imports). b. Comment on the pattern of total exports and imports and trade balance. i.e. are they growing, falling, pretty constant, .... c. Is there any important year, say that stands out or changes the pattern? Discuss
