Treatment of W(CO). with NaCsHs in THF gives a salt which on acidification with glacial ethanoic acid gives a neutral species (A). A shows Vco at 2030 and 1949 cm' and a H NMR doublet at 5.6 ppm (5H) and a multiplet centred on -6.7 ppm (1H). UV irradiation of A yields Hy and B of formula C 6H100,W2. B shows Vco at 2000, 1961, 1971 and 1909 cm. a Heating this complex in toluene yields CO and C which shows a molecular ion in the mass spectrum at m/z of 594 amu. The W-W separation in B is 324.8 pm and is 244.8 pm in C. A, B and C conform to the 18 electron rule. (i) Identify A, B and C and explain how each piece of spectroscopic information is used to deduce the structure of each tungsten compound. [3 x 5marks] What is the multiplicity of the W-W bond in C? [5 marks] (ii)
