The standard costs associated with this football, along with the actual costs incurred last year, are given below (per football): Standard Actual Cost Cost Direct materials: 14.40 Standard: 4 feet at $3.60 per foot Actual: 4.3 feet at $3.50 per foot $15.05 Direct labor: 8.25 Standard: 1.50 hours at $5.50 per hour Actual: 1.40 hours at $6.20 per hour 8.68 Variable manufacturing overhead 2.85 Standard: 1.50 hours at $1.90 per hour Actual: 1.40 hours at $2.60 per hour 3.64 Total cost per football $25.50 $27.37 The president was elated when he saw that actual costs exceeded standard costs by only $1.87 per football. He stated, "I was afraid that our unit cost might get out of hand when we gave out those raises last year in order to stimulate output. But it's obvious our costs are well under control."
