Two theories of self-esteem, sociometer theory and terror management theory, attempt to explain the origins of self-esteem. According to the sociometer theory, self-esteem evolved as a mechanism for whereas terror management theory explains that self- esteem evolved as a mechanism for defense and self-preservation; promoting our own self-importance promoting our own self-importance; detecting social acceptance self-enhancement; social comparison detecting social acceptance; defense and self-preservation
