UNIT 1 CASE STUDIES 1. CHEYANNE AND RICKI Cheyanne and Ricki are thinking about starting a family. They truly believe that all couples should have children, but they are having trouble getting pregnant. In their country, the government has passed a new law that makes it possible for Cheyanne and Ricki to use reproductive technologies to help them get pregnant and to select the most genetically perfect embryo to become their baby. Since the law has been passed, many couples have opted to use the technology. However, because it is expensive, not every family can afford it. And those that can afford it have a distinct advantage because they are able to select the sex of their baby, as well as other genetic traits. Cheyanne thinks that they should use the reproductive technologies to give their baby the best life possible. Ricki thinks that it is immoral and that they should simply raise the child that nature gives them. Cheyanne argues that most couples their age are choosing to use reproductive technologies. She believes that if they do not, their child will not be able to compete with other children their own age at school since all the other babies will have been genetically engineered to be as perfect as possible. Ricki says he would rather spend the money to allow Cheyanne to have more time off when the baby is born. Cheyanne argues that she wants to go back to work and that time off is unnecessary. She thinks the baby will be best in a daycare when she is at work, but Ricki believes the mother should stay home with the baby as long as possible. They cannot agree on anything.
