Unit 2 Assignment: Environmental Management System (EMS) Audit Report.

This technical report template is provided to compile and have an audit checklist for an EMS to evaluate compliance with a consensus standard.

Executive Summary

Provide an Executive Summary with sentences of the most important findings and recommendations from the compliance audit. This should be a few sentences with a statement about the overall conformance of the EMS with the ISO 14001 standard requirements.

Audit Checklist

Place the collaboratively developed and completed audit checklist in this section. Include at least the sections identified in the assignment rubric (general requirements, environmental policy, environmental aspects, legal and other requirements, objectives and targets, environmental management program(s), structure and responsibility, training/awareness and competence, communication, documentation and document control, operational control, emergency preparedness and response, monitoring and measurement, nonconformance and corrective and preventive action, records, EMS audit, and management review). For each section of the audit checklist, you should have at least one item to assess the compliance of, an assessment of compliance or conformance (Yes/No or Present/Not Present or Adequate/Inadequate), and relevant notes for items that are missing, incomplete, or otherwise a nonconformance with the ISO 14001 standard requirements. Review the assignment rubric to assess how many potential concerns or non-conformances you should look for in each section or group(s) of sections.

Cost-Benefit Evaluation

Perform an evaluation of at least one alternative listed in section AE-02 in the example EMS. Note that these alternatives function as interim control methods. Do you think the listed alternative will be adequate to address the regulatory considerations and stated goal(s) of the EMS? Is the alternative clearly tied to the significant environmental aspect (SEA) and the alternatives identified in section AE-01? Is the performance measure(s) for the alternative adequate? Are the environmental effects fully addressed? Is the cost for the alternative adequately justified? What additional information would you request from the EMS committee to fully evaluate this alternative?

Conclusions

Does the example EMS describe how pollution prevention is integrated into the EMS? If yes, how? If not, what do they need to do to improve this EMS? Does this EMS take a proactive approach to waste management? If yes, how? If not, which section(s) need an improved focus on proactive measures? What should the management team and EMS Committee members focus on first?
