Unit 2 Assignment: Matrix Word Problems Follow the assignment instructions and review the rubric: Assignment Instructions In this assignment, you will have to choose two ofthe word problems from the attached document titled, "Systems of3 Equations Word Problems", which are based on systems of three equations and three unknowns and solve them using matrices. You will choose which matrix method you will use to solve each problem from the following: Inverse Matrices, Cramer's Rule. Gaussian Elimination. and GaussJordan Elimination. Vou MUST solve each problem With a different method. In other words, you can't use the same method for both problems. You also MUST solve each ofthese problems by hand. I realize that it is a lot easier to use a calculator for some of these matrix calculations, but the whole point of this assignment is to show that you understand how to use the matrix methods we learned in this unit to solve systems of equations. That is whyl have asked for all work to be shown. In terms of the systems of three equations with three unknowns, you should have prior knowledge of how to set up these problems with their three equations from previous coursework in Algebra. For each problem you must do the following: 1. Write/type out the word problem. 2. Set up the three equations that you will use to solve this problem. 3. Decide and state which matrix method you will use to solve the problem: Inverse Matrices, Cramer's Rule, Gaussian Elimination, or Gauss-Jordan Elimination. 4. Solve the problem using the method you chose in #3. Be sure to show all ofyourwork. 5. Check your solutions by plugging them into all three of the original equations to be sure they are valid. Show yourwork for this as well. Systems of 3 Equations Word Problems (Choose 2) John had 524,500 to invest. He divided the money into three different accounts. At the end ofthe first year he had made a total of $1,300 in interest between the three accounts. If the first account earned 4% interest on its original amount for the year, the second account earned 5.5% interest on its original amount for the year, and the third account earned 6% interest on its original amount for the year. Also, the amount of money in the first account was 4 times the amount in the second account. How much had he originally placed in each account? May's restaurant ordered 200 flowers for Mother's Day. They ordered carnations at $1.50/each, roses at $5.75 each, and daisies at $2.60 each. They ordered mostly carnations, and 20 less roses than daisies. The total order came to $589.50. How many of each type of flower was ordered? The Palladium Arcade uses three different colored tokens for their game machines. For twenty dollars you can purchase any of the following mixtures of tokens: 14 red, 20 green, and 24 yellow; OR 20 red, 15 green, and 19 yellow; OR 30 red, 5 green, and 13 yellow. What is the monetary value of each color token? Showcase Cinemas sold a total of 8500 movie tickets on Thursday of last week. The revenue from those sales was $64,600. There are three types of tickets that can be purchased: a matinee ticket costs $5, a student ticket costs $6 for all day entry, and a regular admissions ticket costs $8.50. On that last Thursday, there were also twice as many student tickets as matinee tickets sold. How many of each type of ticket were sold? Dawn, Bob, and Susan all work in a clothing store. One day the three of them had combined sales of $1480. Dawn sold $120 more than Bob. Also, Bob and Susan combined to sell $280 more than Dawn. How much did each person sell in total for the day? A triangle has one angle that measures five degrees more than twice the smallest angle. Also, the largest angle measures eleven degrees less than three times the measure of the smallest angle. Find the measures of all three angles. At a music festival, souvenir hats, t-shirts, and sweatshirts are sold. The cost of three hats, two t-shirts, and one sweatshirt is 5140. Two hats, two t-shirts, and two sweatshirts cost 5170. And the cost of one hat, three t-shirts, and two sweatshirts is $180. Find the prices of each individual item.
