United States vs. Malaysia The comparison of two Geert Hofstede cultural dimensions that has a significant difference in my home country United States vs. Malaysia. The two countries' drastic difference in cultural dimension is Power Distance, the score of the United States (40) and Malaysia score (100). The second drastic difference is the Individualism United Stated score (of 91) and Malaysia's score (of 26). "This refers to the degree of inequality that exists and is accepted between people with and without power. A high PDI score indicates that society accepts an unequal, hierarchical distribution of power and that people understand "their place" in the system. A low PDI score means that power is shared and widely dispersed and that society members do not accept situations where power is distributed unequally (Mind Tools, 2009)." Leadership in the United States understand its follower by allowing change to be made in the community and the workplace by taking a survey from public and listing to the voice of "we the people." In the United States, leaders allow the public to protest against allowing change implemented by States and Government leaders. When I was reading the score on Geert Hofstede's insight chart on Individualism between the United States (91) Vs. Malaysia (26) was not surprising. United States' slogan is "liberty and justice for all," which has allowed freedom of speech to the Nation for the people. "Individualism" the fundamental issue addressed by this dimension; is the degree of interdependence a society maintains among its members. It has to do with whether people's self- image is defined in terms of "I" or "We." In Individualist societies, people are supposed to look after themselves and their direct families only. In Collectivist societies, people belong to 'in groups' that take care of them in exchange for loyalty (GEERT HOFSTED website)." Malaysia Individualism is family influenced by a long-term commitment from generations. "In Malaysia, society fosters strong relationships, where everyone takes responsibility for fellow members of their group." Groups consist of employees and employers. An effective leader in a global society is a powerful visionary who carries out his/her vision globally by understanding the international market and cultures understand the complexity of international laws. A phenomenal skill a global leader should obtain is communicating in different languages, which is a key factor in a great global leader. The importance of communication, "An essential element of an empowered and high-performance workplace is good communication. One of the best ways to achieve effective communication is to recognize where most people prefer to get information, as opposed to where they actually receive it (Manning & Curtis, 2022, p.174)."
