1. In 2009 it was reported that 45% of all car accidents in Buffalo were alcohol related. Suppose we take a random sample of 200 car accidents in Buffalo and let X be the number which are alcohol related.

a. Find the probability that fewer than half (less than 100) were alcohol related (remember that less than 100 does NOT include 100).

b. Find the prob. that between 140 and 150, inclusive, were alcohol related.

c. Knowing that it was reported that 45% of all car accidents in Buffalo

were alcohol related, do you think that it would be probable that 150 out of 200 car accidents were alcohol related? Why or why not?

2. In 2009 it was reported that 78% of all Americans had a computer in their home. Suppose we take a random sample of 100 American homes and let X be the number which own a computer.

  1. Find the probability that at least 60 homes own a computer.
  2. Why do you think your answer to part a came out the way it did?

c. Find the probability that less than 60 owned a computer.

d. Could you have used the answer from part (a) to answer part (c)? How?
