Development is usually understood as a means for nations to exit poverty. But at the same time, many of today's poor lived quite well before the introduction of "development," which instead made them worse off. "Living well" does not have to mean tall buildings, factories, cars, and cell phones. It can also mean having access to land to grow food, clean air and water, biodiversity, education, health, and community. If many of today's global poor had been left alone, they would still have these things. Their living conditions and lifestyles might not look like ours or how we picture development, but they had what they needed. 

In too many cases, a much worse form of artificial impoverishment has been inflicted on peasant and tribal communities by denying them access to their land, forcing them into factories or industrialized agriculture, and putting them on meager wages instead of allowing them the means of self-subsistence they had practiced for generations. Wealthy nations like the US suggest that this is the way out of poverty for them. While it certainly sets up the US to profit from the trade and cheap labor made available by this development model, it hasn't always worked out for poor nations.
