Using GATT: Article I (Most Favoured Nation), Article III (National Treatment) and Article XX (General Exception), and any other articles within the GATT agreement that you may deem applicable, discuss the following: In the country of Trench, a developing country, and a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), studies have shown that about 30% of the planet's remaining natural forests are located within Trench. The area continues to deplete with each passing year, which has proven to be a concern for other member states within the WTO. Goods produced within the area, specifically an oil based product (palm oil) has been a concern of the Northern Group of States. The Northern Group of States has imposed high tariffs on palm oil originating from the country of Trench, since Trench is one of main producers of the product, and as much as 60% of the exported palm oil originates from Trench. The current government of Trench had abandoned previous policy measures to reduce the rate of deforestation, and the deforestation had therefore increased significantly during the three years it had been in power. If the current rate of deforestation continues, scientists estimate that natural forest area in Trench will continue to decline to 50 % within the next 10 years. Trench has filed a complaint against the Northern Group.
