Using predictive methods as a means to reduce crime is common within the criminal justice system, and while there are benefits of employing such approaches, there are also problems associated with such practices. Make sure to include internal and external source material to answer the following questions:

1. Discuss the major types of proactive policies used to prevent crime.

2. What is risk assessment and why do we use it?

3. Define what cash bail is and why it has been viewed as problematic.

4. Are there problems with eliminating cash bail?

5. How do we prevent those at risk of reoffending from being offered cash bail? What criteria should be established to determine risk?

Each reading application must address the scenario given and be able to incorporate the actual readings into the scenario as well as theoretical and legal support from external sources. Students may only rely on objective academic sources or BJS statistics to support their answers.
