Description of the Context

Mario is a student I see occasionally during latch key. He is funny and outgoing. He is in a 1st grade Integrated co-teaching classroom which consists of 26 students, 10 of those including Mario, have IEP's. The co-teachers in the room are Mrs. Kennedy (gen-ed.) and Mrs. Jackson (special ed.) There is a classroom paraprofessional as well as 2 1:1 paraprofessionals. Mario does not have a paraprofessional but is often helped by all the adults in the room. The students are involved in their usual morning routine. Some are writing in their journal while others are still unpacking and hanging up their coats and backpacks.

Description of Child's Activities/Actions Comments

Mario is still unpacking his belongings. Mrs. Jackson has told him repeatedly to hang up his coat and pick up his lunch off the floor to which he replies "I am" while making silly face and noises. He proceeds to drop his coat and lunch bag again. Mario eventually has everything put away and happily returns to his seat. The teacher instructs the students to put away their journals and get ready for math. Mrs. Kennedy tells the students to get out their pencils and math book. Mario puts his head down and begins to cry. Upon questioning, Mario tells Mrs. Jackson he is upset because he has no time left to complete his journal.

Mrs. Jackson calms Mario as Mrs. Kennedy calls the student to the rug for the math lesson. During the lesson, Mario is looking out the window and playing with his glasses. Mrs. Kennedy is teaching adding and subtracting using groups of ten.She hands out mini cubes and 10 sticks to help the students understand. Mario proceeds to try to build with the sticks. The para takes them away from him and reminds him to "pay attention". The students are then broken into smaller groups. Mario is in a group of five with Mrs. Jackson. She goes over the lesson again giving the student a dry erases board and cubes to "practice" with her. Mario is doodling on his board. Mrs. Jackson refocuses him and ask him to solve the following: if Joey has 3 jars with 10 balls in each jar, how many balls does Joey have? Mario was unable to formulate the equation without step-by-step help from his teacher. Even with her help he had to count by ones to get the correct answer.

  • It looks like Mario is distracted by the other children moving around the room and cannot focus on the task at hand.
  • He uses silly noise and facial expressions to distract from the fact he is not doing what was asked or is unable to accomplish the task at hand.
  • Mario was distracted by several loud outbursts from the other side of the room.
