I believe that there should be a balance. Schools need to be ready for children and be accommodating to each individual child instead of expecting every child to be at a certain level all at the same time. At the same time, I think that preschool and pre-k teachers should be aware of developmental milestones and the goals for what kindergarten teachers are looking for, and scaffold learning activities to help to get children to that level. "While many of us focus on the basics of letter and number recognition or reading skills, kindergarten readiness encompasses more than a few isolated skills. We need to look at the whole child and all the skills and strengths each child has developed"(Ready or not kindergarten, here we come!).

Kindergarten has been evolving in recent years so that it is more academic based and less play based. Children learn through play and even when they reach kindergarten, they should still have the opportunities to learn through these play experiences.
