Using the resources that you have learned about the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) process, develop a tool to conduct a risk assessment. Include a step-by-step description of the process, including your thoughts on how would actually go about completing each step in the process.

The activity is a graded journal entry. There are many tools and frameworks out there for this process, but the basic steps are generally consistent between all methods, including hazard identification, risk assessment, and risk analysis. These three steps involve separating hazards that could not occur from those that could, determining the consequences of the possible hazards, and then prioritizing the most frequent and highest consequence events. Steps that are crucial to the disaster risk management process, but are treated differently by the different methodologies are setting the context, communication and consultation, and monitoring and review. Setting the context involves considering the scope of the assessment such as the geographic area or the organizational factors.

So considering the above and the lesson materials, you should map out how you would assess risk. What would be the steps that you would take if you were asked to conduct a risk assessment? We recommend selecting an area (i.e. Edmonton) and a hazard (i.e. flooding) and then map out the rest of the process. You may wish to examine one of the methods provided as options for assignment 4b:
