Van Der Bergh et al. (2011) conducted a study about the use of Facebook by students. A random sample of students from a small university in the United States were contacted via email and asked to complete a survey. One question asked students how much time they spent per day on Facebook. Students who completed the survey were then sent another email which asked them to install software on their computer which monitored the time they spent on Facebook. Of the 110 students who completed the survey, 45 installed the monitoring software on their computer. For these 45 students, the time (in minutes) each student said they spent on Facebook each day (as reported by the student in the survey) was recorded, as was the time (in minutes) each student actually spent on Facebook each day (as measured by the monitoring software). The researchers were interested in whether there was a difference between the self-reported time and the actual time, on average. (a) For this study describe the: (i) units, (ii) treatment or factor of interest, (iii) response. (b) Which form of statistical analysis should be used to investigate this data? For your answer, write down EITHER A two-independent sample t-test A paired data t-test OR [1 mark] [1 mark] (c) (i) Use iNZight to draw the appropriate plot(s) for this study. [1 mark] Note: Two files of the data are available on Canvas: Assignments > Assignment 3. You will need to choose Facebook Datal.csv EITHER OR Facebook Data2.csv You may need to manipulate the data prior to drawing your plot(s). [Hint: Consider how the data should be arranged given the answer you chose for (b).] [3 marks] (ii) Comment on any features in the plot(s) in terms of the original story.
