VANCOUVER AIRPORT AUTHORITY Vancouver Airport Authority is the occupier of Vancouver international Airport. One day, Khalifa. a middle-aged (45-year-old) man from Surrey, BC, was at the airport with his family getting ready to board a flight to Paris, France. Khalifa was standing in line to check his baggage. and was walking forward while looking around I at all the passengers and different types of people from all over the world. Khalifa was thinking to himself how different it looked with everyone wearing a mask. What Khallfa did not notice because he was looking around at all the other passengers and not at the ground in front of him was a banana peel on the oor that must have been dropped by another passenger. Khalifa slipped on the banana peel and crashed on the hard floor underneath him. Khalifa suffered a broken arm and bruises on his knees and had to go to the hospital and miss his trip to Paris. He was unable to engage in his regular activities, like playing basketball, for over six months. Vancouver Airport Authority has a policy for maintaining safety with passengers at the airport. This includes workers passing by every 10 minutes to check to make sure the ground is safe and free of trash or other substances that people could slip on. Staff are instructed to clean up any mess as soon as they see it. According to employee records. on the day Khalifa was injured, a worker had Just done a walk-around In that area of the airport one minute before Khalifa fell. At that time, there was nothing dangerous on the ground. This is also confirmed by video showing the area where Khalifa was. The banana peei was therefore on the ground for less than one minute, and no staff had yet seen it and had a chance to pick it up before Khalifa fell. Khalifa still suffers some aches and pains from his fall six months later, and has recently decided he should sue (take to court) Vancouver airport authority to try to get compensation.
