vapor Knockout Drum Compressor water Steam condensate Process solution Brine Figure 2 Wastewater treatment plant a) The control loop in Figure 2 shows the temperature controller of the evaporator is cascaded to a steam flow controller. The ATC control valve is linear with a gain of 10 gpm/%CO and its time constant is 0.3 min. The transfer function of the steam flow process is 0.5 gpm/gpm with a time constant of 0.5 min. The transfer function of the steam flow to the evaporator temperature is first order with a time delay of 0.3 min, a gain of 3 F/gpm and a time constant of 5 min. i. Determine the zero-order transfer function of the transmitters if the flow transmitter has a range of 0 to 600 gpm and the temperature transmitter has a range of 100F to 400F. The output of the transmitters is in a unit of percentage. (4 marks) ii. Propose a suitable controller setting (P, PI or PID) for the flow controller and temperature controller. Justify your answer. (4 marks) iii. Construct a complete cascade control block diagram with a complete transfer function for all control elements. (8 marks) b) A dynamic process has a gain of 4, a time constant of 3 s, a time delay of 0.7 s and damping factor of 5. Generate a transfer function of the process and determine its overshoot value.
