verall, it'ssafe to say poor writing, including grammar and punctuation mistakes, can make legal documents harder to understand and interpret. Sometimes legal texts are written to be vague to allow for multiple interpretations, but sometimes something as small as a comma can bethe difference between $0 and $52,000.For example, the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978, this law replaced the Bankruptcy Act of 1898,and on its surface it was written to do things like introduce federal exemptions to protect specified properties from creditors, expand opportunities for debtors to repay debt from future income, ect.But there was an issue, the act had been debated and drafted and changed so much 1that some of the language was ambiguous, particularly regarding the interpretation of something called post-petition interest for secured creditors.2Fast forward to 1989, theSupreme Court case United States v. Ron Pair Enterprises, Inc. brought this ambiguity to light.Ron Pair Enterprises filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and the government filed a claim for unpaidtaxes, penalties, and postpetitoninterest to collect on their debt. Ron Pair paid off the prepetition claims, but refused to pay the interest that accrued after the bankruptcy filing.3So they took it to court, the government argued that they were entitled to the interest on secured claims that had accrued interest after the bankruptcy petition had been filed, while Ron Pair argued the opposite. The case focused on interpreting Bankruptcy Code 11 U.S.C. 506(b), which revolved around payment of interestto creditors.4The Supreme
