Victor and Vladimir class-mates who rented the top floor of a house owned by Kirvan. Another couple rented the ground floor. The two suites had separate entrances, with Victor's and Vladimir's entrance leading to a set of stairs.

After the government finally ended the covid-19 lockdowns, Victor and Vladimir decided to throw a mask-burning party. That Friday, they invited Ruby and Rose who they knew from school. When they entered the building, Ruby and Rose found the staircase lighting was out of order. They attempted to climb the stairs in the dark. Ruby made it to the top, but Rose tripped on a loose step, breaking her arm. Victor and Vladimir knew of the faulty light and the loose step but had not thought to warn their guests. However, they had texted Kirvan of both defects earlier that evening, and he agreed to fix them on Monday.
