Case Study:

Faiza is a black, Muslim woman and is 25 years old. Faiza got pregnant at the ageof 16 and decided to keep her child. Her baby's father is no longer involved, and Faizahas been left to be a single mother to her daughter. Faiza is currently in a verbally abusiverelationship, but does not foresee herself leaving her mate at this current time.

Faiza is the oldest of six children, all of whom have different fathers. Faiza'smother is a heroin addict who spends her nights away from her children. When Faiza wasborn, her mother was 17 years old, working as an escort and living on the streets. Faizawas severely neglected by her heroin-addicted mother. At the age of 7 Faiza was terriblymalnourished and already caring for her two younger siblings. Faiza has also experiencedsexual abuse at the age of 10 by her mother's ex boyfriend.Faiza had enrolled in high school but had to recently drop out due to herpregnancy.

Currently Faiza is working part-time at a fast food chain and engages instripping at a local strip club most evenings. At this time, Faiza is trying to save up forthe expenses to care for her unborn child.In the past Faiza has experimented with hard drugs such as dope, coke, acid andPCP. Faiza is addicted to drinking alcohol and she fears that her addiction will affect herbaby.

Faiza gets between 4-5 hours of sleep per night and eats when she can afford it.Although Faiza is 5 months pregnant, she still finds time to care for her younger siblingswhen she can which includes helping with their homework and tucking them in at night.

Questions:

1 ) Discuss the strengths and limitations of the case study method when conducting research into personality.

2) After reviewing the case study above, provide a brief conceptualization of Faiza.

For example:

Can you determine a cause-and-effect relationship in her life?

Can you utilize a theory you learned from your General Psychology class to conceptualize her life?

Can you generate any hypotheses about the nature of Faiza's personality?

3) Now apply these example questions to your personal life. Wr ite a brief case study (I-2 parag raphs) symbolizing your lifetime and generate a hypothesis about the nature of your personality.
