VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

0:00-

0:03-As you got us here, maybe you ought to - you

0:05ought to take charge of this meeting, okay?

0:07-Okay.

0:08So I took the liberty to put together

0:10a little agenda.

0:11I had some of you - I sent an

0:12email to everybody.

0:13Did everybody get a copy?

0:14-Yeah, I did.

0:15I'm like looking at - this looks like a

0:19massive project, and, as you know that I'm -

0:20I'm going to be segueing into the Design

0:22Department and am only going to be here for

0:23three to four more weeks, so whatever is

0:26delegated to me, I think it's going to be

0:27important that you also understand the

0:30limitations it will have, and if I am going

0:32to be doing some of this stuff, I'm probably

0:35going to - whoever's going to be taking over

0:36my position, I'm going to probably need extra

0:38help so you guys aren't hung out to dry.

0:40So that's all I wanted to start out with this

0:41meeting telling you guys.

0:43-Well, I think three or

0:43four weeks is enough time.

0:44I think you're - the reason why you're moving

0:46to the Design Department is you have a lot of

0:48energy and a lot of dedication, and that's

0:49why you've been assigned to this team.

0:51At least that's what I've been told.

0:52-Yeah, well -

0:53-So I don't think it's going to be a problem.

0:54So we have high expectations.

0:56-Yeah.

0:57Well, my mother-in-law is coming into town.

0:58So she's moving in, so I've got to like - you

1:01know, Chang, I know you're the best at what

1:04you do, and I think that I'm definitely going

1:07to need a lot of help here.

1:09I mean, I can't work overtime right off the

1:13bat, and during lunch I have a couple of

1:17things I have to take care of to accommodate

1:19for my mother moving in -

1:20my mother-in-law moving in.

1:21-Kyle, you got complaints, too?

1:22You got problems, too?

1:24-It's not a complaint, Joe.

1:25I mean, it's -

1:26-I have no complaints.

1:28-We all have lots of work to do, all right,

1:29we've been assigned to do this.

1:30I went ahead and took the liberty to put

1:31together an agenda.

1:32I'd like to review it -

1:33and we can all talk about these things,

1:34because let's understand what

1:36we're going to do.

1:37There's a number of tasks here, right, and

1:39we're going to talk about what they are,

1:40we're going to talk about the legitimacy of

1:41going through there, and then we're going to

1:43talk about how we're going to divvy them up

1:44and how we're going to get it done, right?

1:46We all have mother-in-laws, we're all moving

1:48on, and we have X amount of time to be able

1:50to get the work done.

1:51Okay?

1:52So can we just stick to the focus and go

1:54through these things?

1:54Is that okay?

1:55-Absolutely.

1:56-Yeah.

1:57-Okay.

1:58The first issue is assess the current

1:59hardware and software in all the different

2:00six offices, right?

2:02So, for example, if four out of the six

2:04offices use something, maybe that's the

2:07direction we begin to lean.

2:08-Joe, I think we know what the things are, and

2:12I think we need to move this meeting

2:13along a little quicker.

2:15-Okay.

2:16What do you suggest we do?

2:18-Well, just kind of go through them a little

2:19faster, just because I've got to make a

2:20couple of phone calls and -

2:22I appreciate your sort of energy towards

2:25moving on other things, but this also

2:27deserves some attention.

2:29All right.

2:30Evaluate the current market options,

2:31hardware- and software-based solutions,

2:33right?

2:34So we have to understand what's out there,

2:35right?

2:36We have to understand first of all what's

2:37being used by the different offices here and

2:39then what's also available.

2:40Okay?

2:41Does everybody agree with that?

2:42Right.

2:43-Uh-huh.

2:44-Okay, wonderful.

2:45Then examine the learning curve for time lost

2:46for the most potential solutions, meaning

2:48that if we're going to change something

2:50within the different offices, we have to

2:51understand what's it going to take, what's

2:53going to be the learning curve, what's the -

2:54what are the resources we're going to have to

2:56put toward actually teaching people to be

2:57able to use that software.

2:59-You know that's been tried before?

3:01-No, I didn't know that.

3:02-Yeah.

3:03Well, I mean, you're new,

3:04so how could you know?

3:05But it has been tried before many times, and

3:06I'd love it to be done differently, more

3:09efficiently than last time, because I cannot

3:11tell you how many times they've tried to

3:13streamline, you know, and it just

3:15goes down the stream.

3:16-Yeah.

3:17Well, I think that, again, this project has

3:20been hanging out there and a number of people

3:21have tried it.

3:22-Yeah.

3:23-As you pointed out to me.

3:23-Yeah. Yeah.

3:25-So, you know, the four of us are going to get

3:26together and figure out how to do it, how to

3:27do it right this time.

3:29-Right on, Joe.

3:30-Right?

3:31-Okay, great.

3:33We're having fun, guys.

3:35-How many do we have left?

3:37-We have one left, one left.

3:38-Oh, okay.

3:39-Okay?

3:40So we have to evaluate the workload of the

3:42six different - the offices, and therefore we

3:44need to understand how we're going to

3:46actually implement that software.

3:47So have I left something off the list?

3:49-No.

3:50-Number one.

3:51-It's very, very efficient.

3:52-Rosa, you think - I'm sorry.

3:53Do you think anything has been left off,

3:55anything you'd like to add?

3:56-No.

3:57No, I think you covered it and then some.

3:58-Chang?

3:58-No, it's crystal clear for me.

3:59-Okay, so - all right.

4:01So we've got the stuff on the list, right?

4:02So I guess the first question would be does

4:04anybody volunteer to take on

4:05any of these items?

4:06-Well, just one thing that I'm thinking of,

4:09the timeline.

4:12I just - you know, when we do do this, I just

4:14want to raise a question of concern, thinking

4:16of exactly how heavy the workload or the

4:19responsibilities that I'm going to have

4:20to undertake, because -

4:22-Nobody works faster in this office

4:23than you do.

4:24-Yeah, Chang.

4:25-I know.

4:26But, however, when I segue into the Design

4:27Department, who wants to pick up

4:30where I left off?

4:31-You've been transferring to that department

4:32for a long time.

4:33-Hey, you know what?

4:34Hang on. Hang on.

4:35-And you have the time -

4:36to do some of this.

4:37-Simon, sorry to interrupt, but you know what?

4:39First let's understand the tasks at hand, and

4:41then we can figure out how long

4:42it's going to take.

4:43Let's not worry about it just yet, because

4:44you know what?

4:45-That makes sense.

4:46We might find something you're going to love

4:46to do, okay, of these items, there might be

4:49something fantastic.

4:50So don't worry about that.

4:51Let's first, before we all start worrying -

4:52-I can't commit too much of my time.

4:55I mean, I'm having a lot of

4:56trouble with Jose and -

4:57-Okay.

4:58I understand that, so let's just try to break

5:00it down even simpler, right?

5:02-The most thing I'm interested in doing is

5:03putting the calls out to the other field

5:04offices and have those reports come back in

5:06to me and start developing those

5:08into a streamlined report.

5:11-Fantastic.

5:12So that's basically

5:13item B on the list, right?

5:14And, Rosa, is there anything on the list that

5:16you'd be interested in doing?

5:17-I'm embarrassed to say, but I didn't download

5:19the list from the email.

5:21-So just in general, so -

5:23-Can I look at the list, please?

5:25-There's a budget issue.

5:27-There's just so much going on

5:28in my life right now, Joe.

5:29-Well, let me make it simple for you.

5:30-Okay, please.

5:31-Okay?

5:32I'll make it simple for you.

5:33So we're going to assess the current hardware

5:34and software, right?

5:35That's something that we can even send out a

5:37memo to all of our employees to sort of say

5:39what's working and what isn't working, right?

5:42-You're going to get an opinion

5:42from every employee?

5:43Are you kidding?

5:45-Well, I think we could send out an email that

5:46says, "Which software do you use the most?

5:48Which software do you not?

5:49Which is useful and which isn't?"

5:50-And you know what you're going to get back?

5:51Solitaire.

5:52-Is that what you teach them?

5:54-I walk around and I see them.

5:55You know, half the people are sitting there

5:56playing solitaire, talking to their

5:57mother-in-law, Simon.

5:59-It's my opinion that I think that Rosa is

6:01probably the best person for the account

6:02management [inaudible] assessment.

6:03-Yeah, I agree with that.

6:05Because she does [inaudible] than any of us.

6:06-Right, guys.

6:07-That's what I was thinking.

6:08-So right now, Rosa - that might change, but

6:10right now I'm just going to put your name

6:11next to that one, okay?

6:13-You - but I'm going to be knocking on your

6:16desks, don't worry about it.

6:17-Yeah, you can knock on my desk any time.

6:18If I'm not there, you just keep knocking.

6:19-Okay. Because you're too busy

6:21playing solitaire, right?

6:22-I don't play solitaire.

6:23-So I'll tell you what.

6:25So let's just back up and say for a moment

6:26that I'll go ahead and assess the current

6:29hardware and software use

6:31in all six offices, okay?

6:32-I've got to get out of here, okay?

6:34-Hang on.

6:35We're almost done.

6:36-I've got to get out of here.

6:37-Can I just - can we finish this item?

6:38No, look, I have to get out of here.

6:39I've got a meeting.

6:39I've got a meeting down the hall.

6:40-But if I need help,

6:41you're going to help me, right?

6:42Because I can't do this by myself.

6:43-So, Simon, I'll tell you what.

6:43Can we do this another time?

6:44I've got to go.

6:45I'm really - I'm really pressed for time.

6:46I'll assign you to a couple of things.

6:47Yeah, I think it's a good idea that we

6:49[inaudible].

6:50We'll talk about it later.

6:50-Okay.

6:51-Oh, Joe.

6:52-Yeah, well, I know what I'm supposed to do.

6:54-Yeah.

6:55-Okay, guys.

6:57-

7:02-Coming into this meeting, I thought we had an

7:05agenda and that this agenda was -

7:08everybody had a copy of it.

7:10They should have had a copy of it.

7:11They should have reviewed it.

7:13I showed up to the meeting, realized that

7:15only Chang had a copy of the agenda, and Rosa

7:18and Simon did not.

7:20There's a couple of things that I believe

7:25when you go to any meeting - number one, you

7:26have to show up.

7:29Number two - at least we got that.

7:30Number two, you have to show up on time - at

7:32least we got that.

7:33But number three, there needs to be an

7:34agenda, and you should be

7:36aware of the agenda.

7:37And number four, when you leave the meeting,

7:39you should - you should understand what the

7:40next steps are.

7:41Like I said, Rosa and Simon didn't even know

7:44what the agenda was.

7:46They spent more time - most of the people

7:50spent more time complaining and talking about

7:52what they couldn't do or why they couldn't do

7:53it as opposed to focusing on

7:55the tasks at hand.

7:56In retrospect, I think I would have taken the

7:58personalities into consideration a little

8:01more and therefore been a little more

8:04proactive and anticipate sort of the

8:07situations that may have happened in the - in

8:08the meeting and therefore make it more

8:11productive, make it more effective, and

8:14definitely make it much more efficient,

8:15because everybody's got other things to do.

8:17And I think how I would have - how I would

8:19have done that is to - is to think through

8:22who in my mind would be appropriate for which

8:25tasks ahead of time and then lay it out on

8:28the table and have gotten their reactions.

8:30And if they wanted to change it, then we

8:34could, and if not, we'd implement that

8:35and move forward.

8:36If you work anyplace, I think that you should

8:43be committed and dedicated and passionate

8:45about what you do.

8:46If you're just having a job, I think that one

8:50should consider, you know, making pizzas or

8:53pumping gas or something than working in a

8:56professional environment where you have to
