Visit a health care organization that uses an EHR system and interview the CIO or staff in the IT department who can answer questions about their use of the EHR. Also ask them to direct you to lead users (physicians, nurses, or units) that are heavy users of the system.

Questions

1. Who is the vendor of their system? What factors prompted their choice of the system?
2. Identify the top three features or functionalities that are being used heavily.
3. Identify two to three features or functionalities that they wished they used more. What is inhibiting them from greater acceptance or use of these features?
4. In your assessment, how would you characterize the organization in terms of meaningful use of IT? Which of the three stages best fit them at present?
5. What advice would you give them to enhance their use of EHR in their practice?
