I think that informants can be a very useful tool to police when investigating a crime. Informants are able to provide the police with information they otherwise would not be able to obtain, or have no way of knowing, ultimately benefiting their investigation.I think that informants can definitely be a great source of information in many cases, however there have been cases where information gained from informants was relied on when it was in fact not reliable. Informants who are desperate and are at risk of losing everything will usually be cooperative and gladly pass along any information needed to help with their situation. Informants who are genuinely concerned with their own well being and their family's is enough of a motive for them to snitch. Perhaps the police offered them money, a lower sentence if they commited a felony. Their own self interest is usually the number one motive for informants. I also think that there is always a chance of police corruption, but yes informants, and their responsibilities working with crime and law, does present a welcoming and easy door to get illegal drugs, or any other substance an officer may want. It may also be easy for the officers to persuade or manipulate the informant into getting illegal substances under the table simply because of the power they hold by wearing the uniform.
