The 68-95-99.7 rule states that about 68% of all values fall within 1 standard deviation of the mean (1 standard deviation above the mean and 1 standard deviation below the mean), 95% fall within 2 standard deviations of the mean, and about 99.7% fall within 3 standard deviations of the mean.These conclusions are obtained from empirical observations about normal distributions, so this rule is also called the Empirical Rule.
