This case introduces the challenges involved in the management of a large-scale information systems project. There are several project management complexities introduced to the students, as the integrative nature of the project requires the technology solution to meet the needs of more than one customer (seven regional police service organizations). Vendor management issues are also presented as the group of police service organizations are outsourcing the major project to a single vendor; students have an opportunity to understand the challenges in this relationship. Strategic management information systems planning is also addressed, as the case allows the students to understand the background of the organization, evaluate the benefits and risks of the actions taken to date and determine appropriate strategies for going forward to resolve the information sharing needs. Students should understand the key planning, communication and strategic concepts that are explored during the WRPS decision-making process regarding the management of the CIMS project.
