We are designing a beverage plant to produce beverages sweetened with dextrose and no
fructose or sucrose. Your task is to design a process to blend water and a concentrated
dextrose syrup to produce two products.
One product, containing 20+-0.5wt% dextrose, to be produced at the rate shown
in Table 1 below. This product will go to Area 2000 of the new plant.
The other product, containing 5+-0.25wt% dextrose, to be produced at the rate
shown in Table 1 below. This product will go to Area 3000 of the new plant.
The products should leave your area at 3bar(gauge). The concentration specifications
for the products are average concentrations over a 1-hour period.
You will have two feeds available:
Concentrated dextrose syrup at 40C and 5 bar (gauge) will be available at the
concentration shown in Table 1 below. Note that this concentration may vary
over a range of +-2wt%.
Food-grade water will be available at 20C and 5 bar (gauge).
Please observe the following constrains:
Mixing vessels should use pump-arounds with a total flow rate of 60,000kgh.
Size vessels to be about 75% full under normal circumstances.
Approximate mixing times at design conditions are as follows:
To dilute concentrated dextrose to 20 wt % dextrose: 30min
To dilute concentrated dextrose to 5wt% dextrose: 45min
To dilute 20 wt % dextrose to 5 wt % dextrose: 20 min
Your design should include controls for the feed and product stream flow rates, the
product concentrations, and tank levels. You may neglect the dynamics of control valves
and measuring devices.
