We are often asked this question as to what is consulting in Organisation Development (OD).
This question is asked because currently there is no agreement on the meaning of the term organisation development, and it is still less clear what a consultant in organisation development is. We firmly believe that only companies having an internal structure corresponding to their goals are able to develop successfully. For instance, to distribute functions and authority, to create a transparent system of interaction and control, to develop a common set of values, to unite various divisions into an efficient team for the purpose of performing clearly defined tasks... the key term is development, and development is a process, this implies the fact that besides analysis and advice, helping to carry out organisational changes is also a significant part of management functions. My approach from the very beginning would be from simple to complex issues for better
Comprehension of all the concepts both in particular and in general. Therefore, I would like you to be acquainted with the basic elements of organisation, including structure, task, technology, and people. Structure refers to the formal interactions within the organisation as evidenced in the organisational chart or organogram. Organisation as a system can be changed and developed to achieve its goals in the best possible way. The goals of an organisation generally are: survival, stability, profitability, growth and service to society. From one organisation to another, the goal or goals may differ depending up on at what stage of development the organisation is. The system process school considers organisation development in the context of both its internal and external environment, while procedures and programmed school, concerned with personnel activities that contribute to the overall growth and development of the organisation. Personnel function is primarily concerned with OD activities, at present, its functions contribute only partly to OD. They at best serve the organisational control or maintenance function.

a. Identify two personnel function that contribute to the overall growth and development of
the organisation. (2 marks)
b. Draw a simple organisational chart/organogram to show that structure refers to the formal
interactions within the organisation. (4 marks)
c. Despite no agreement on the meaning of the term organisation development explain
with reference to organisations in Batswana, the importance organisation development in
achieving following:
