We are to design a distillation column operating at atmospheric pressure to separate a binary mixture A & B. The vapour pressure data is given in the Table below. A 100 kmol/h of a feed mixture containing 40 mol% of A and 60 mol% B at 98 C is to be separated in a column in such a way that 90% of A is recovered as a top product with a purity of 95%. The column is operating at 1.4xRmin. The unit operates with a total condenser and a partial reboiler. The stages can be assumed to be 100% efficient. The average latent heat of the mixture can be assumed to be 30 kJ/mol and is invariant with composition. 1. What is the average value of the relative volatility for this system? [3 marks] 2. By showing appropriate balances, calculate the product flow rates and their compositions [5 marks] T(C) 80 82 84 86 88 90 92 94 96 98 100 102 104 106 108 110 Vapour pressure Vapour pressure A [atm] B [atm] 1.00 0.38 1.06 0.41 1.13 0.44 1.19 0.47 1.27 0.50 1.34 0.54 1.42 0.57 1.50 0.61 1.59 0.65 1.68 0.69 1.78 0.73 1.87 0.78 1.98 0.83 2.08 0.88 2.19 0.93 2.31 0.98
