We have already explored the concept of social contracts. In order to promote the greatest good as a civilized society we have established governance. The government, that we have empowered to do so, has established a system of regulations, statutes, and laws. We are expected to follow those laws, which provide order. Remember, although this principle acknowledges that some individual freedoms may be sacrificed or decreased, overall, they allow us to live better lives.

The letter of the law which we have come to depend on and are used to, may change overnight in response to a crisis. During World War II, the country was expected to sacrifice to support the war effort. Laws were enacted that changed life as it was known.

Gasoline was limited to three gallons, purchasing new clothing was restricted, families were expected to grow "Victory Gardens". In 2020, major, almost overnight restrictions were placed on the entire U.S. population, the first time since the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic. In a pandemic world, it is likely we will not get to wait another 98 years before it happens again.
