Question:
We live an extremely litigious society. Someone steps on another person's toe and the stepee (the one who got her foot stepped on) is ready to sue the stepper for a million dollars. Or worse, a manager at Walmart accidentally steps on a customer's toe and the customer sues Walmart for 50 million dollars. (No, that did not really happen . . . as far as I know). If Courts did not allow such outlandish awards there would not be as many ridiculous lawsuits. Courts are going crazy and allowing people to sue for excessive awards. Read the pinkish purplish box entitled Stella Liebeck on page 157 of our textbook. It is entitled "Thinking Things Through"
- Discuss the case and your opinion (in general) about "Stella Awards. Discuss means - I need you to give some of the facts of the case. (What happened that caused the lawsuit- Details are important). Then what happened when the case got to court, and what were the final results. Then you can discuss your opinions on the matter.
- Using the Internet, find an example of someone suing for/or being awarded a huge sum of money for a matter that does not seem quite right (Stella Award) and summarize and discuss that case as well. Warning: Every website is NOT reputable. Make sure you choose actual cases to discuss and not make-believe ones.
- Now that you know what Stella Awards are (and after whom they were named), do you think that the Stella Liebeck Case belongs in the Stella Awards Category? Explain why or why not. Please do not argue that the Stella Liebeck case belongs in this Category because the "Award" is named after her.A simple "Yes. Stella Liebeck'scase belongs in the Stella award category." is NOT enough. I can walk up to someone on the street, and they can post that sentence up here having never read about the case, and having never done any of the work above.
