We see in Warren St. John’s Outcasts United how the rapid demographic changes that occurred in Clarkston led to a wide variety of culturally confusing and incendiary moments—instances in which problems occurred or were exacerbated by differences in culture and language.  Consider which actions proved to be the most successful in handling these problems.  What do these actions have in common, and what does all this say about the successful functioning of super-diverse communities? 

For your fourth paper, you will formulate a thesis that addresses this question.  Keep in mind that there is more than one answer.  Some questions to consider:

·      Do we see how, as Steven Vertovec argues, “top-down efforts to impose contact and understanding between various groups [are] likely to fail”?  If so, are Vetrivel's ideas of de-categorization and recategorization effective?  Where?

·      Is there a relationship between the functioning of super-diverse communities and individuals caught between two worlds?  How might solutions of one issue affect the other?
