We've collectively come to the realization that fossil fuel energy is neither infinite nor sustainable based on our current usage patterns. Since fossil fuels are a non-renewable resource, heavily exploited with significant environmental impacts, many have begun the search for an alternative that may (one day) entirely replace fossil fuels.
