Good thinking is difficult. The reasons for this are abundant: limits of time and energy, motivation, and bias. It is not possible to consider every alternative all of the time. Sometimes our thoughts are made quickly and lack the scepticism they should rely upon. Other times we are motivated to believe certain things, because examples are readily available, the availability heuristic, or because we do not want to think negative things about ourselves and others we identify. We are biased to beliefs that are consistent with our own, and make errors of confirmation bias. There are many reasons why we do not think critically all of the time. In the following table, create a list of good and bad thinking habits. There are several examples provided. In the space provided, list a counter habit for the good or bad examples in each row. In the last row, try developing an example of your own. GOOD HABITS Cares to understand things deeply BAD HABITS Relies on evidence and questions assumptions Recognized flaws in own thinking, humble Closed-minded (or biased) when considering others views Leaps to conclusions
