In my small town, we have made the decision to allow the volunteer fire department to fill pools. Filling with the fire hose is reasonably quick as compared to a garden hose. We do bill for the water used; a homeowner would have that cost anyway. We also ask for a donation to the volunteer fire department for the labor. Now not every city or town chooses to allow the fire department to fill pools. Here is a problem from the week 2 zyBook for a homeowner filling their own pool. Let's take a look at how we might approach it:

A long garden hose (100 feet) has a slower output of about 5 gallons per minute. How many minutes are required to fill a 2000 gallon pool?

I will initially set up a ratio.

5 gallons

1 minute

Now I will continue by setting up a proportion.

5 gallons = 2000 gallons

1 minute ?? minutes

And finally, I will cross multiply and divide.

2000 gal * 1 minute / 5 gallons = 400 minutes
