ECG Authentication

Biometric authentication is becoming more popular, but many of the methods are very expensive to implement and can have unpredictable results. For example, a iris scan is great in that each individual has a unique iris, but not every company can afford a eye scanner, and the scan itself requires the individual to remain still for around 15 seconds. If there is any movement the results will be useless.

I found a interesting article on the use of electrocardiogram signals for authentication. According to this study each individual has a unique ECG signal and, they claim, there is no way to duplicate this signal. Using this signal they developed a method of authentication which was over 98% effective and only had a 1.2% false acceptance rate. This seemed kinda high to me, but even retina scans (which are apparently the most accurate biometric scan currently) have a similar false acceptance rate.

Additionally, getting the ECG signal is probably much easier and less expensive than the alternatives, making it a more practical authentication solution for smaller businesses.
