What is the difference between those two? In (2), the two events (rolling a die and tossing a coin) had nothing to do with each other. We would say that what number we get on a die is INDEPENDENT from getting heads or tails when tossing a coin. In (1) the events are "related to each other". Whether we get number 3 is influenced by the fact that we already know that the number is odd (notice that if we knew that the number is even, we would know that the probability of getting a 3 is zero). These two events are DEPENDENT. The intuition behind independent events is that one does not influence another.
