Procedure To a mixture of 2.40mmol of untreated, commercially available zinc powder and 2mL of a saturated aqueous NH4Cl solution is added a solution of 2.00mmol of benzaldehyde in 1.0mL of THF. This mixture is stirred vigorously in a 25mL round-bottomed flask fitted with a condenser while 2.40mmol of allyl bromide is added dropwise via a pipet, through the condenser. The allyl bromide should be carefully added so that each drop falls directly into the stirring mixture. Loss of compound as a result of running the liquid down the side of the condenser lowers the product yield. An immediate reaction takes place, with loss of the zinc powder. The mixture is stirred for 0.5h, and 4mL of ether is added. The mixture is filtered through a plug of glass wool to remove excess zinc and any precipitate (zinc salts) that may have formed. The precipitate is rinsed with 4mL of fresh ether. The organic phase is separated, and the aqueous phase is washed once with a fresh aliquot (2mL) of ether. The combined organic phases are dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated to afford 1-phenyl-3-buten-1ol as a colorless liquid. Characterize the compound using IRStep by Step Solution
