Mark Barton entered his new office at the Health West Clinic in Pocatello, Idaho. He had been recently hired as the community's program coordinator. In this position, he would be responsible for managing public relations and marketing communications, volunteer work, and grant-writing efforts on behalf of six clinics located in different rural towns in southeastern Idaho. Health West, a federally funded healthcare facility, focuses on the delivery of primary care regardless of patients' ability to pay. Mark was excited to start his job and was thankful that his healthcare management education had prepared him to work in a field that mattered to him personally. He would be able to help other Idahoans like himself. The patients who went to the clinics paid for healthcare based on their income and ability to pay. When Mark was growing up in rural Idaho, his family was not able to afford health insurance. Clinics like Health West ensured that he and his family received the primary care they needed to stay healthy. Now he would be able to help other families. Kimberly Lauren entered her new office at Kohler Company in Kohler, Wisconsin. She had been recently hired as a Wellness Program Coordinator. In this position, she would be responsible for a comprehensive and integrated wellness program aimed at improving the health habits and wellness of Kohler Company associates and their dependents. Kohler Co. develops innovative products, such as plumbing fixtures, furniture, tile and stone, and backup power systems. Kohler Co. also develops services through its two luxury resort properties in the United States and Scotland. Kimberly was excited to start her job and thankful that her undergraduate degree in health education with a minor in business management, along with her master's degree in public health, had prepared her to work in a field that mattered to her personally. She would be able to help workers and their dependents learn about and engage in healthy lifestyles. When Kimberly was growing up, her family encouraged healthy nutrition and exercise habits. She remembered preparing meals together, playing softball and basketball together, and attending exercise classes together. She looked back on those times with great fondness. Now she would be able to help other families. Mark and Kimberly are part of a formal discipline that focuses on the delivery of products and services to improve the business performance of an organization. While Mark and Kimberly will work in different environments, both have developed skills and will learn new skills that will help them integrate the work of others to meet the missions and achieve the goals of their respective organizations and ensure the work is done right and is on target. Mark sat down at his desk in his office in Idaho; Kimberly sat down at her desk in Wisconsin. Both looked forward to their new management positions, and both knew they possessed skills that would help them in these new roles. However, this was their first day of work, and both said to themselves, "Help!"
