Christianity grew from a small sect of Jewish followers to one of the largest (and most powerful) religious traditions in the world. Jesus, and his small community, did not find widespread acceptance within Judaism. But once it was transmitted to non-Jews (Greeks, Romans, and Africans), it grew quickly into a coherent religious system with a political presence in every region it went. It is not true that every Christian tradition views what it means to be Christian the same way. In fact, anthropologists have documented that Jesus, and many of the "core" tenants of European and American Christianity, do not exist in some Christian communities around the world.
