Somalia Migration Crisis

In the last 30 years, because of political instability and a dangerous civil war that broke out in the 1990s, hundreds of thousands of people have left Somalia. More than 750,000 Somali refugees live in neighboring countries today, and more than 2.6 million Somalis in Somalia are internally displaced. Kenya (256,186), Yemen (250,500) and Ethiopia are the neighboring countries where the vast majority of Somali refugees remain (192,082). Countries like Yemen and Ethiopia have a long tradition of accepting refugees from Somalia, while having internal migration and refugee crises of their own. In the southern regions of Somalia, severe flash floods and river flooding have displaced over 650,000 Somalis in the first eight months of 2020. Many of the newly displaced are now living in overcrowded, temporary shelters in already desperate IDP sites made from old clothing, plastic bags, cardboard and sticks. Sanitary conditions in shelters are low and access to medical services is limited, and shelters offer little protection from harsh weather and leave families at increased risk of violence. The migration crisis in Somalia that has led to refugee problems can be addressed in three separate ways: - by voluntary repatriation, by relocation abroad and by integration, either in the country of residence or in conjunction with intra-African migration. They should also receive continued protection, and to maintain the space for asylum.
